Ker – Lofty Thoughts
Ker’s ‘Lofty Thoughts’ is such a beautiful way to begin this week’s ’Spring Folklore’ album. The singer-songwriter and folk rock artist becomes lost in a lush contemplative scene. The instrumentals weave through the suspended vocal emotion. It feels vivid, like you’re walking through the jungle of the protagonist’s thoughts. Some of the melodic textures are almost tactile, brushing against you like a branch along the way. With intricate chords, mellow orchestral features, and a very Nick Drake reminiscent voice, the song is not something you want to get over. There’s so many beautiful layers of listening and feeling in this song and it feels intimate. It is replete with connections.
Mike Darrah – No Way
Mike Darrah’s latest track, ‘No Way’ elongates this intimate space. The mood is vulnerable, the atmosphere is raw. The artist unpacks heartbreak. He casts his memories, feelings and a helpless ache into the song and fashions a musical journal. It is powerful in its honesty and matchless in how much he pours into it. The feeling details every aspect of the song. It deepens, carries you through its ocean and allows you to perhaps unlock that space in yourself. The song fleshes out melancholy, gives it a beautiful depth that leads you to your own. With his roots in folk and punk, he creatively weaves their accents in. Emphatic acoustic riffs, defiant vocal boldness and a grounding voice. All of it showcases a stylistic proficiency that you want to keep exploring.
MONNE – wonderful human
Concluding this week’s list is ‘Wonderful Human’ by MONNE. A traditional folk track that is native in its style and expression. MONNE’s vocals are distinctive in a way that marks her folk. It dictates the emotion. It charges the atmosphere with a dated charm. With fluid rhythms styles, stream of consciousness instrumentals and oriental touches, her folk is blissful. It is rich in tradition and culture, celebrating it with a deep understanding of it. Think Moana title track or some of Avatar’s music. That deep folk character that connects you to something innately human in ways others cannot. Those tribal accents are a boon. With the liveliness of the track, she brings to life the theme of wonderful human, infusing a sense of contentment, belonging, consolation, and joy in the listener. Listen Now!
