This week’s ‘Riffs & Roads’ list is all about that Drift

By

With artists like Ava Valianti, Wholes, and Thompson Newkirk, this week’s picks are marked by the rhythmic journeys, giving you that sense of contemplative momentum that will elevate your travel.

Ava Valianti – Distant

Ava Valianti combines storytelling with a mellow, seamless indie rock atmosphere with her latest release, ‘Distant’. While her vocals are intimate and personal, the soundscape is detailed with paper riffs, crunchy textures, drifting beats, and passing tales. All of these coalesce into a rhythm that aligns naturally with the pace of a moving car. That sing along energy comes with it; the riffs and beats immersing you in the emotion. Despite the melancholy of the theme, it is a great soundtrack to have on when you have wind in your hair and the sun in your eyes. That feeling of buoyancy and energy surge sets the perfect tone for a journey. Listen Now!

Wholes – Modern Day Drama

Wholes is a new age, experimental rock banner that adapts traditional features of rock to a contemporary interpretation. A lot of their soundscape is made to set the mood, spread an atmosphere that starts a dialogue about the theme. In their sophomore release, ‘Modern Day Drama’, they bring a dark, crackling and deep space that casts an aura of premonition, of mystery and thick suspense. The riffs detail the sound to cast an air of vintage cinema. With its over the top musical histrionics, performating vocals, and a growing sense of plot, the song can keep you guessing, giving you something to get lost in during long drives. A lovely post rock expression that is nothing like anything you’ve ever heard.

Thompson Newkirk – Rebel Soul

With rich flavors and richer riffs, Thompson Newkirk’s latest Southern Pop-Rock release, ‘Rebel Soul’ pops hard. The artist and singer-songwriter has a candid style going on visceral and raw. However, he keeps it fun, dimensional, and refreshing. He plays around with the old school and the new. Blending old textures and rhythms with modern melodic style, indie rock influences, all of it to create a whole new genre frame. It especially shines with this track because of how fluid the stylistic transitions, musical sensibilities, and emotions present. Imagine yourself flying down the coast alongside a burning horizon of sound, feeling, and color. The track has a way of liberating you and throwing you open.
