Elephant Moon – 149 Northbound

Elephant Moon’s latest release is ‘149 Northbound’. The track is rustic and raw folk, spilling out of the artist, stained unapologetically by the state of mind, momentous emotions, and floating thoughts. Think Bob Dylan and that era of folk where the genre was used as a soul style, to connect, express and find the depth behind the feeling. That’s the way Elephant Moon sets his folk out. The track forms slowly, almost as if standing still. Each moment is doted upon and fleshed out with vivid and unfiltered instrumentals. The guitar strings are plucked with a visceral hand and the harmonica is played from a vulnerable and brash space. The result is a complete showcase, the good, the bad and the ugly. Nothing to hide, everything in all its complexity is revealed for the listener to absorb.

Eternal Mourning – Working That Mine

Eternal Mourning’s ‘Working That Mine’ is yet another folk masterpiece. Piercing and emerging from a guttural space, the track is made to immerse the listener. There is incredible resonance in every element that it lingers and spreads, coloring everything it touches. The presence of the track runs deep like family bonds, ancestral pain, and striking poverty. It is dated, old school, transports you to severe times in history. The vocals run deep, there’s something undeniably human and unsettlingly sad about it. It is unwavering in its reality. And the instrumentals follow suit, unabashed, probing and so evocatively vast. Chris Oledude – The Choice

Chris Oledude’s ‘The Choice’ adds a great dimension to this week’s list. The soundscape is fun and dynamic, with theatrical features and vivid thematic imagery. The artist blends classic rock moments with a choral lift, to highlight the theme’s distinctive realities and the choices that you have in front of you. Good or bad, heaven or hell? And it’s up to you, the choices that you make, dictates consequences. There are a lot of dimensions within the track. It’s contemplative and has a lot of color and textural detail. The vocals ebb and flow, with moments of piercing clarity and thoughtful debate. The melodies and the chords have a descriptive function, painting the thematic backdrop to contextualise the vocal message.
