This Week’s ‘Riffs & Roads’ Explores An Alt Rock Edge

By

Jax Fleming – I’ll be Fine

Jax Fleming’s latest is the ‘I’ll be Fine EP’, an alt rock connection that is crisp, sharp and a freshness that pulls you in. The title track features the perfect riff profile to start this week’s list off. With electric chord motifs, bold riffs, and a statement vocal line, the track sounds as if it’s forming in the spaces around you. The luminous atmosphere seems to transfer to the room. Jax’s vocals are confident, charismatic, and descriptively contemplative. The emotion is explored and reflected on simultaneously. With impactful baritones that run deep into the melodic space, the whole track, its story, melancholy, loneliness, and strength, is all over.

Moon Construction Kit – Chemicals

Moon Construction Kit’s ‘Chemicals’ is a textured powerhouse. The alt rock song is as slanted, edgy and awry as the title suggests. Exploring the theme, the band goes raw, with textures slice, swipe, and tear through. The riffs are a circular flow. Layered on that are expressive synth tangents. Basslines that create dark opening spaces, and a coarse and confounding vocal line. It is a complex song with no format, no head or tail. Look out for the 90s influences, the abstract atmospheres and definitely enjoy the mounting energy that comes out of it.

Broken Colours – Pretending

Broken Colours delivers a dynamic, piercing and groovy single with ‘Pretending’. The grooves are crisp and catchy, driving as it keeps turning and moving forward. This energy is matched by the vocalist. He keeps it drifting, fun and full of interesting speculations and opinions. You feel like taking off with him and seeing the world he’s getting ready to show you. The bassline is the grounding factor, a delightful presence that becomes prominent between verses. The melodic alt rock style is reminiscent of artists like The Kinks; Whether it’s the rock n roll influence, crunchy, distorted, and proto-garage guitar work or the genre blending genius of it.
