Hollows – Blood
Hollows is a four piece alt rock band. Their style is layered, with moments of grounding and peak. In their latest release, ‘Blood’, the band craft a labyrinthine track, deep and dark with thematic evocation. It has astounding moments of raw vulnerability. Building up on that depth, the soundscape rises to a peak that feels exhilarating and settling at the same time. The riffs scale spectacularly and the vocals form concentrically. Its intensity is tempered with soft piano notes floating in the backdrop. A rich tapestry of rock that forms and spills over to create an immersive cave of emotion. It’s powerful, compelling, and perfect for the adventurous moments in travel.
DIEMER – Fantasy
DIEMER gives us a driving, textured pop rock fantasy with her latest, ‘Fantasy’. There are two emotional planes to this track. One that forms on the groovy, sonic level and the other that draws you in, a more layered, grungey, and alt rock plane. Both in the guitar work and the vocals, you get to experience these spaces and the elastic fantasies that they present. There are feel-good flows, so fun, upbeat and positive but underneath it, a story broils, a pain/ melancholy reveals itself. So many dimensions that you can draw from as you let your imagination take over. As you form that fantasy and explore the protagonist’s journey with love, heartache and hope.
Clinton Belcher – Save Me From Myself
Clinton Belcher’s spectacular performance in ‘Save Me From Myself’ is the perfect way to conclude this week’s Riffs & Roads queue. The vocals are a baritonal dream, deep and swirling with dreams. It scraps at the emotional barrel and gives it all to the listener. Leaves it all for the taking. That vocal intensity is matched by splashy basslines, ploughing riffs and a beat line that drives it all up. The man has such a talent with his guitar. His ability to enlarge and expand the thematic experience with the instrument is phenomenal. The angst, the emotion, the strife, the struggle. It all comes so powerfully into the scene.
