This week’s Riffs & Roads list offer edgy companions to the journey

Percy Higgins, The Amber Bugs, and Souza are all about expanding into the sound. Their styles have a way of creating horizons that keep on stretching and creating arenas of riffs.

Percy Higgins – Quiet Table Power

Percy Higgins is a legendary one-man psych rock band from Adam Kingsley. If that doesn’t tell you how badass the artist is, his music will. Quiet Table Power is Percy Higgins’ debut single, introducing his brand of psych rock that oscillates between the genre’s retro origins and its contemporary interpretations. It is angsty, dynamic, ever-changing, and incredibly revolutionary. The track introduces the artist’s upcoming debut album titled, ‘Don’t Rag on the Spider’.

Percy is a visionary, unafraid to delve into the chaos and emerge with mercurial sonic forces. Quiet Table Power has an irrepressible allure – set up with groovy bass lines and hollow verses that are haunting vessels that take us through funk hooks, mesmerizing riffs, and shimmering shreds. He feeds post-punk and slow-burn grunge into hypnotic riff formations to elicit a psychedelic daze. And these psych sensibilities distort reality in a way that clarifies it. With edgy riff builds and sublime percussive acrobatics, he styles and elevates the theme. As we descend into the curated world of the artist, his revolution, his legacy, and his art stick to us and follow us into the real world.

The Amber Bugs – Based on a True Story

The Amber Bugs are an indie rock band that is known for their innovative and genre-diverse sonic sets. Influencing the rough textures of rock with colorful infusions of jazz and blues, they craft rustic yet dimensional soundscapes. ‘Based on a True Story’ is the latest EP release by the band. It boasts two tracks: ‘Based on a True Story’ and ‘BOATS’; the latter expressed in three versions.

Both tracks are etched with the vocalist’s textured baritones as he liberates stories from the depths of his consciousness. Each vocal inflection deliberately shapes melancholic themes with an arresting honesty. A quick sonic shift absorbs the low-lying acoustics into mercurial frames of jazz keys and fuzzy riffs. And somewhere along this transformation, the tale curves into a resplendent climax.

Souza – Endless Fountain

Souza is an alt-rock band from Stoke who refine the genre with their distinctive style. The four-piece band carefully forge electric riffs and refreshing vocals to create a nostalgic new age. And with strong allusions to 90s pop-rock styles, their work is reminiscent of artists like The Smiths, Regina Spektor, and Paramour. The band has released their latest track titled, Endless Fountain.

True to its title, the song is sprayed with endless riffs, resplendent with luminosity and resonance. Their energy is defined and clarified by the plain vocal emotions. Its vulnerability and romantic naïveté liberate both the soundscape and the listener.
